The Antioquia region has over 130,000 hectares planted with coffee beans. The region annually produces more than 1.8 million (70 kg bags), representing 15% of Colombia's coffee production. In Colombia, coffee cultivation is the main source of income for 90,000 families in 94 towns. Most of these families grow 3 to 4 generations of coffee.
In the "Best Cup" competition held in Antioquia, there was a noticeable increase not only in the number of competitors but also in the quality of the coffee presented. In 2013, competing farmers submitted 504 coffee lots, and in 2014, 803 lots were submitted from every municipality in Antioquia. Winning lots receive cash prizes. The coffee tasters in Antioquia who test its quality are the government and the national government council. For example, in 2016, 703 coffee lots were submitted, and after the committee completed tasting, only 296 lots were selected to be offered at auction.
